Hope for some common sense in Congress

Expect lots of chest thumping this week in Washington as the Senate picks up a bill that would deter members of Congress from realizing financial windfalls from information they obtain while doing the public's work.

Fight to keep public notices accessible to all

Long before transparency was the catch phrase of government watchdogs, Arizona newspapers have been the primary fighters in the battle to keep government records open to citizens. In the last few years, the transparency fight has moved to protecting the public's right to know by keeping public notices in newspapers.

Looking for love in all the wrong places

Dear Jim: After reading way too many misleading claims and outright lies made by women in online profiles, I'm now focused on meeting women in person. The problem is, the bar scene has changed since I was last single (I'm 56, and got divorced last year after a twenty-five year marriage). No matter where I go, there are no women my age there, other than the ones who come in with their girlfriends and are basically unapproachable. There may be younger ones sitting by themselves, but they look at me like I'm a pervert if I try to talk to them. I wind up drinking too much and going home alone. I don't want to return to online dating, so what's the answer (assuming there is one)? ("Al")

My wife and I have been coming to the Sunsites area since 1999. We fell in love with Sunsites, with the golf course, and with the people.

Justified

In response to the resignation of the Constable who pleaded guilty due to personal problems, as the wife of Mr. Bruce Shane Sr. and a victim in the case, I would like to say, if Mr. Stewart did feel threatened he had already worked himself up to it, standing outside Mr. Harbolts' home, a very long time yelling, "I know you're here and I'm not leaving until you come out".

Giffords will continue to inspire beyond Congress

It wasn't for a pension, which she won't receive for almost another decade. It wasn't for some political reason that would benefit the Democratic Party or hurt the Republican Party.

Excessive costs

My thanks to Bonnie Diehl for having checked and reported the difference in the costs of having some lab work done locally at NCCH vs. a lab in Tucson. $400 is indeed a huge spread for a relatively minor service. Perhaps the hospital management and/or a board member will be willing to offer a credible explanation.

Is this 'proxy' legal?

I received the 'proxy' vote form for the Rex Allen Museum Annual Membership Meeting and have to wonder if it is "legal". For starters, some members I have spoken with have not received this form at all.

Outpouring of support

On Sunday, Jan. 15, our mobile home was destroyed by fire, but our regard for the human race increased a thousand fold.

Ambulance response

As a concerned citizen of the Willcox community, I am presenting this complaint to the Arizona Department of Health Services. In rural communities we understand and accept the fact that emergency ambulance service can be delayed, as well as police or sheriff department response. However, we should have a responsive emergency ambulance service. That is not the case with the current provider in the Willcox area, Healthcare Innovations (HCI). Our community has been left without ambulance service numerous times.
